美国宝石学院 Gemological Institute of America 的创办人Robert M. Shipley于1931年在美国Los Angeles成立GIA，最初是用夜校及函授方式训练珠宝商如何评估批发价，1953年GIA在New York创立了第一所实验室 Laboratory，开始签发钻石鉴定报告书，而后又在加州圣塔蒙尼卡 Santa Monica 及LA市区设立另两个 Laboratory，正式名称为宝石业鉴定公司 Gem Trade Laboratory .INC (GTL)，GTL隶属于GIA专职鉴定不估价。

Diamond Grading Report 是一份钻石品质分析的参考文件，并非一般所称的保单或国际保证书，今日GIA分级制度与专业术语已成为国际钻石语言，许多从业人员是依据GTL的钻石分级 制度为标准。

Diamond Grading Report 的真正意义为钻石品质报告书，主要的四大功能有：
